13 hours

I slept for 13 hours last night. Yep, I was tired. I’m probably a wuss when compared to athletes, soldiers, and new parents, but I needed SLEEP!

My team presentation went really well. Even though it involved a lot of stress and frustration, we knocked it out.

Immediately following our class, all of the MBAs plus their families gathered in the lounge for the annual Korean TG. TG is a play on TGIF, but I think even the acronym got abbreviated over time.

The MBAA got us 150 lbs of Korean bbq plus tons of other traditional dishes. All of my Korean classmates were involved in one way or another. One of them was a very very busy bartender. He looked beat by the end of the night.

MBAA election results were announced and I’m extremely happy to report that my good friend Jonathan is now MBAA President-elect. Go Jonathan!

Anyway, when I finally got up today, I took a long, hot shower, went out for Mexican food with Danny, hit Target, and then came home to read and do laundry. It is not exciting in the least but it is so damn satisfying.

I have plenty of homework due next week, but I can handle it. There are no more group projects due for at least another week. I have to work on a couple of cover letters and submit them but that shouldn’t be too awful.

To those of you who have left supportive comments, thank you! I do read them and I do appreciate it. Plus, I’ll need more once midterms begin.

Does not compute

I’m so tired. No really. I’m more tired than those times before when I thought I was tired. I wasn’t really tired. I was LAZY. Geez.

This week has been hellish for most of us. Not only do we have tons of assignments due, but we’re trying to put together a quality presentation by Friday. I have four team meetings tomorrow: one from 8-9am, one from 10-10:30pm, one from 4-4:30pm, and one from 6-whenever we get finished.

Today, I was studying macroeconomics with some of my classmates. The problems weren’t terribly difficult, but my brain was just not functioning correctly. I need sleep or a stiff drink. Or both. In short, I felt like this.

laundry list

I’m short on time so here’s a brief laundry list of what’s been happening and what is coming up this week.

1. The s*** is starting to hit the fan. I have three team assignments and two individual assignments due this week, not to mention hundreds of pages of reading. Reading = okay. Assignments = stress.

2. I just finished my finance homework. Unfortunately, it was the easiest one in terms of time spent. I still got lots to do.

3. My class got had a rude awakening yesterday. Our strategy teacher started cold-calling us on specific numbers buried within our 100 pages of reading. We perked up quickly and started flipping pages.

4. I have my first team presentation on Friday. I hope our prof likes it.

5. I can’t complain too much because some of my teammates had a VC competition today. This = stress, lots more work, and one less day to complete the tasks I mentioned above.

In other random news, the snow melted by Wednesday and it was sunny and in the 40’s today. Danny and went to the international district for dim sum and some shopping. I know it was procrastination, but it was worth it to get out of the house for a few hours.

*blink blink*

I could barely stay awake during my 3:30 class today. I had to speedwalk from the health center to the business school building right before class and my body went limp after I settled into my seat. A little tea woke me up after the break but I still had a lot to do. I’m taking 18 hours this quarter. Four hours of that is optional and it’s for electives that really interest me: BCN (Business Consulting Network) and my study tour to China. My BCN project is getting busier even though I don’t feel like I’m devoting nearly enough time to it. Basically, a team of four to five students provides consulting services to a local business of our choice. We have a great project but we’re finally getting our goals and schedule together. In addition to this project, I’m getting two hours of credit for taking the international business class associated with my trip to China. The class is optional but the trip is so interesting and will require so much planning I might as well get some class credit for it. It meets five times before our trip and I’m required to do a short presentation and a short paper as well as attend every session. The classes are from 5:30 - 7:30pm every other week. It is pretty easy but it’s hard to remain engaged at the end of a long day. I used to do it for work but it’s different with school. I feel like I’m missing out if I don’t participate, but I’m so tired by the end of the day that I just want to go home and recharge.

Speaking of recharging it’s time to go to bed.

On another note, it snowed another 1-2 inches this morning. It was beautiful but annoying for commuters. I got on the bus right before it completely filled up. At least I didn’t have to wait in the snow for the next one. A lot of the snow melted today and it’s supposed to be in the mid-30’s tomorrow.

Oh the weather outside

…is frightful. But the fire is so delightful.

It started snowing about an hour ago. Correction: it started hailing about an hour ago. After about ten minutes of small hail, it switched to light snow and then heavy snow. Granted, I’m from the south so I probably don’t “really” know what heavy snow is. Regardless, the roads, yards and all stationary objects are coated.

Today was a short day of school and I couldn’t be happier. Until the quarter gets going, I have a little more free time. I’m trying to use it to get ahead while I can, but I’m still factoring in some goof-off time. I know it won’t last. I got out of class at 10:30 today and then came home. I’m glad I did since now I won’t have to wait in the snow for the bus.

Here are some pics of our front yard about 20 minutes after the snow started. I should probably go study now.

We won!

It turned out that our team beat the other three teams in our section. Yay! Like I said before, I thought we had done well but we weren’t sure that we had won. The only bad thing is that the room where we had the awards was extremely hot. So we sat there for an hour and a half learning about how to improve our argument and presentation skills in the near future. Most of us were still in our suits and we were roasting. By the time they announced the awards, I felt like I was soaking in a puddle of sweat. Nice. Oh well. I looked quite bright-eyed and rosy cheeked for the photo.

After the awards, I went out with some of my classmates for happy hour. Then we returned to campus for the MBA happy hour….then I went out for Mexican food and margaritas with Danny. It’s not a bad way to start the weekend.

Winter case competition

We finished our presentation about an hour ago. I’m relieved and tired. We think we did well but I really don’t know if we won. We’re competing against three other teams. Not to go into too much detail, but since there are at least sixteen teams, each team is divided up into sections of four, and then each team presents to a group of four judges. We got 12.5 hours to analyze our case yesterday and turn in our powerpoint slides. This morning, everyone arrived at 8am to find out the order for presenting. We were last in our section. Although it’s good that we had more practice time, it also gave us more time to stress out. I think we did well but man, that was stressful. Talk about jumping in with both feet.

Now we’re killing time before we meet with the judges and find out the results. I want a nap.

Just so you know

…I’ve started winter quarter. Tuesday was fun. Yesterday was a little boring but at least it was only for half of a day. Don’t get me wrong; I think the classes will be cool. It’s just hard to come back from vacation and sit in a classroom for four consecutive hours.

Today, we start our mini-case competition. I have no idea what this entails except a lot of brainstorming and some powerpoint. I’m optimistic but then again I don’t know what I’m getting myself into.

More to come…
