financial aid? Check.

I got my finaid yesterday and I’ve put it to good use by buying my course packets online. I got my first batch today - 4 for $228 including shipping. I still have two more to buy plus some books. Even though that is a bit for pretty photocopies, I think I’ll end up spending considerably less this quarter than last. For starters, I’ve secured at least one discounted textbook from a second-year student. Second of all, I bought one of my books last summer thinking I’d need it for the fall when I really didn’t need it until now. This is horribly fascinating, I know.

I don’t miss the stress but I do miss my classmates. Maybe it’s because I’ve been home now for about a week and I’ve spent my day watching TV and packing for our move (tomorrow). I’ll get to see some of my ‘mates at a New Year’s Eve party on Sunday.

That’s all of the excitement for now. Oh yeah, this quarter I’m taking marketing, strategy, macroeconomics, finance, plus an international business class which is related to my study tour to China in March. That makes up my sixteen credits plus my group consulting project that will take place between now and spring break.

I’ll sleep when I’m dead.

help from my friends

I just got my vacation photos off the camera and here’s a little “proof of procrastination” from two weeks ago. This is Boris desperately seeking attention.

phew

I got my grades and I have successfully made it through my first quarter. I don’t know the grade I have in each class, but I can make a pretty good guess.

ITI: good
Management: good
Statistics: kinda good
Accounting: satisfactory
Microeconomics: scraped by by the grace of God

I can find out the grade I got in each class next week. I’m not worried about it though. I’m far above the minimum requirement but I will not make dean’s list. That’s fine. I’m happy. I’m also happy that I got through it and I didn’t cut anyone in the process. That is to say that I didn’t go nuts and take it out on those around me.

Danny is a saint. I will spend the next few weeks doing nice things for him so he remembers that I still love him when I’m holed up in the library again next quarter.

To all MBAs, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and most importantly, happy time off!

Finally, the good with the bad

Despite the weird weather and lack of power, something very very good happened today. Danny and I found a new apartment. The lease at our current apartment ends in January and we are ready to leave. It sucks. It sucks really really hard. The neighborhood is nice but the complex is trashy and just awful to be in.

The funny thing about our new place is that it is exactly 0.2 miles from where we live now. Despite our shitty complex, we are really close to school. Now, we’re just in a better apartment. We are so freaking excited. The best part? It has a fireplace AND air conditioning. Kickass.

back too soon

I’m back at school again. Because of the extremely high winds last night, over a million Seattleites (sp?) are without power. Danny and I are two of them. Anyway, we needed to find somewhere to connect this morning and the coffee shops are overloaded. So instead we’re back at school. Danny’s getting some work done and I’m apartment hunting online. It’s strange being in the library and not having to study for anything. I just hope the power comes back on sometime today. Right now, it’s doubtful.

thoughts on my first quarter

The level of schoolwork required didn’t break me. I thought it might, but it didn’t. Go me.

My classmates are really smart. They’re also really nice. It was hard to find anyone with an arrogant bone in their body.

I need to loosen up a bit more. I felt like I was incredibly serious and I’m not really that hard-core.

My classmates are cool. I should try to get to know them better.

My teachers are real people. Even after a killer exam, I don’t resent them (much).

There is more to school than schoolwork. I should go out with classmates more despite homework and projects.

I love presenting. If I could present in every class I would.

I need some new clothes and a haircut. I don’t want to look like the grungy grad student anymore.

and?….I’m done

I finished my last final yesterday at 3:27pm. I had until 3:30. It was statistics and it was hard. However, I think it was hard for just about everyone. I was still a bit bummed about it because I’ve been doing well in Stats so far. Maybe the teacher will be generous with partial credit.

After our last final, all of the first years gathered in the MBA lounge for food, beer, and t-shirts. I was so beat I could hardly maintain my end of a simple conversation. After about 20 minutes, I grabbed my shirt and went home. After a two hour nap, I felt much better.

Last night, some of my classmates had a party for us. I showed up fashionably late and had a really good time. I kind of wish I’d gone drinking with the Korean students beforehand though. They seemed to be having the most fun. Oh well, there’s plenty more time to celebrate with soju.

I’d planned on being totally lazy today, but a power outage due to high winds knocked out our electricity around 8:30 am. Since we couldn’t get anything done at home and Danny needed to work, we went to the laundromat and took advantage of their free WiFi. I don’t know how much work Danny got done, but I did seven loads of laundry and had time to grab coffee at a nearby cafe. We went home at noon and the power was back on. We celebrated with Indian buffet for lunch and then returned home to not put away the laundry or do anything productive for the rest of the day. Well, at least I wasn’t productive.

So that ends my first quarter as an MBA. It was hard but it wasn’t horrible. I have some good friends and I know a lot more about accounting, economics, and time-management than I did before. Even though finals sucked, I’m looking forward to next quarter. Who ever says that about returning to work after a vacation?

Eight hours and counting

…until accounting Armageddon.

Danny: So, how’s studying going?
Me: Really well! I’m kicking ass on my accounting practice test.
Danny: Really? That’s cool!
Me: Yeah, I’m getting about 80% of the questions right. I would have been happy with 50%!
Danny: Always aim high baby.

boo

Preface: I get a lot of weird emails. I had a very common maiden name and about once a week I get emails meant for another Sarah. Apparently, she missed out on this gem with nothing but a picture and the word “boo.”

I’m really glad I got this today though. I need some silliness to make me laugh out loud and not stress so much.

The more you know…

snow for the southerners

At first, I accidentally wrote “snot for the southerners.” Hee. I’m glad they got snow and not snot. Here are a few blurry pics from the snow we got two weeks ago.

Daniel took these photos on Sunday night before we went out to dinner at 8pm.

By Monday morning, the roads were clear and stayed clear until that night.

Here are the pics I took outside of our apartment on Tuesday morning.
