China China China

I just found out that I got into the UW Business School’s 2007 study tour to China. Yay! China was my first choice.

I was kind of worried about getting in since I’m not on the high-priority list of students who need a tour to graduate.

The other tours I could have chosen are India, Greece and Turkey, and Argentina. The Greece and Turkey one sounded cool too, but my first choice has always been China since my goal post-graduation is to work with companies in China and Japan and even possibly live in Asia.

Does anyone have tips for traveling in China? One of my friends mentioned that I should try a lot of the food but to make sure that it’s cooked thoroughly first.

Well, at least I didn’t fail accounting

Microeconomics on the other hand, was a bit of a letdown. I didn’t “fail” but I certainly wasn’t at the top of the pack or even hanging out in the middle. I’m trying to stay positive about it. Our prof said that our average was higher than usual so I hope I’m still on par with most classes. I know I’ve come a very very long way in this class. I just hope it is reflected in my final grade. I need to keep working on it.

I’m so beat. I’m going to swim a few laps, head home, eat, and do accounting.

I didn’t fail!

I got my accounting midterm back today and I didn’t fail! I did better than simply not fail but I’m still not going to smother my test in gold stars and put it on the fridge.

The stats test this morning was…how should I say, an unpleasant experience. I really like stats (I DO) but this test was demoralizing. I think most of my classmates had similar reactions. The only thing I can really compare it to is a basketball move. It’s as if I was trying to block someone from running in and doing a layup but they completely dodged my block and scored before I even knew what happened. By the time I reacted, it was all over.

So maybe that’s a sucky analogy but that’s what it felt like. We were all in shock but still happy that it was OVER. Tomorrow, I get to start fresh: no tests or projects due for at least two weeks. How did I get so lucky?

Returned

I’m back from the retreat. I was there for less than 24 hours so it was more of a short trip than an actual retreat. Details aside, I had a fun time. The house was gorgeous and it was fully loaded. I’m talking about food. I can’t think of anything we didn’t have to eat. I’m still stuffed.

I arrived around 11am and decided to stay in and do some studying while the other people went shopping. I didn’t want to be a downer but I really really needed to study for my Stats midterm. I really enjoyed the quiet time. We had a view of the shore from the house. Even though it rained all day, I was nice and cozy with my homework and my coffee.

Everyone started returning around 4 and we chatted, watched movies, and continued to eat. We played some board games, drank, and had a good time in general. It was more relaxing than I thought it would be.

I got home around 10:30 this morning and went back to sleep. I was not ready to finish my homework yet. Today has been pretty easy. I cooked lunch and dinner for the next few days, sent some email, studied, and cleaned a little bit. Right now, I’m listening to the combined sounds of rain on the window and “Revenge of the Sith” which Danny is watching downstairs.

Retreat!

Tomorrow, I’m heading up to Marysville for the UW MBA Women in Business retreat. I’m really not a girly-girl, but I am interested in learning more about my classmates. Since my background in tech means that (unfortunately) 90% of my coworkers were male, being around so many smart motivated women is a little different for me. I’m excited about it but it’s not a dynamic I’m used to. I think the plan is to just hang out, eat, drink, and maybe get some homework done. I’m sure it will be more exciting than that sounds but I just want to relax with classmates AWAY from campus for a change.

Today was really good. I’m finally getting to relax a little now that 75% of my midterms and 100% of my presentations are complete. To celebrate the end of these exhausting two weeks, my teammates and I went out for a very nice, long, huge Korean lunch downtown. I ate so much I’m surprised I needed dinner tonight. Our waitress was really cute: she is Japanese and spoke a funny mix of Japanese, Korean, and English. I could pick up some of the Japanese and English but watching her try to converse with my classmates was really entertaining. Everyone had a good time I think. I’ll definitely have more Korean food in the future, but I need to find out the names of the dishes I ate today. All I know is kimchee.

Speaking of good food, I’ve been invited to the Sushi and Sake Festival being hosted by a local Japanese historical society called Densho. I found out about it from a wonderful woman who is very involved in the Japanese business community as well as women’s business ventures. I met her when she came to campus two weeks ago to speak at a Women in Business event and since then I’ve attended a local seminar called “Doing Business in Japan.” She was a great host and introduced me to many local leaders in the Japanese business community. Since I’d love to work in Japan once I get my MBA, this was a huge step in terms of getting my name out there and networking. Everyone was so so sweet and I really hope I have time to be more active in similar events outside of school.

Next week is only four days long because of Veteran’s Day. It will be busy (two early morning breakfast seminars before class) but I’ll get to end it by going to the sushi festival on Thursday night and then sleeping in and studying (a little) on Friday.
